This article from Adobe Creative Cloud is from 2017(!!) but I keep it bookmarked and like to revisit it every once in awhile. The first time I saw it, I was feeling frustrated as a creative and photographer. I was struggling to put into words what I really wanted to be doing. I saw this short video and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I get a little emotional every time I see it, and I think it’s because I feel so seen. She talks about her approach to capturing candid moments. About how it’s when you’re “accepted and forgotten” by your subjects, that’s when the intimate moments play out and the real pictures come. YES! She talks about finding her strengths as a women in a male-dominated field. She explains that by accepting herself, she actually found advantages. Being a woman opened up access to worlds and moments that others couldn’t access. YES! Finally, she decided she can make a difference using photography. That images can be “useful as well as beautiful.” That by informing and raising awareness, it’s possible to make a difference. And that by offering perspectives you can motivate others to help make a difference. YES YES YES! Thank you Annie for doing what you do. I hope everyone enjoys this short film.
